William Hogarth's  great exhibition in London (1971) at the Tate Gallery established beyond all doubt that Hogarth was one of the great 18th century artists. Hogarth's prints have now reached the discriminating collector.  He was more than a painter or a printmaker, but a true painter printmaker.  He crafted his art work at two levels:  the "ordinary viewer " and the  collector who has working knowledge of the classics and the scriptures. The two-tier approach enabled Hogarth to reach a broader audience than any other printmaker.
